Training, Practice, and Study
Number 4 of our 14 Attitude Requirements to Master Tang Soo Do is "Maintain regular and constant practice."
Being a student of the martial arts doesn't begin and end at the dojang door. This is especially true during the holidays. Students should be practicing their stances, techniques, and hyung, and studying Korean terminology and history, on a regular basis. The higher the rank, the more materials to practice and study.
I recommend logging your practice and study time, and setting goals each week and month. Separate from training time, practicing or studying for 10 minutes per day, 3 days per week is a good goal for a white belt. And higher ranking students have more materials to cover, requiring a higher goal.
If you are already logging your martial arts time, awesome, keep it up! If not, I have small notebooks for any student who wants to keep a written journal. I’ve also created a mobile app, Um Yang, for keeping digital logs and tracking your monthly progress wherever you are.
Install: Um Yang
Going forward, I will be asking students to present their logs to me and their peers on a regular basis. And for teen/adult students, you can find your friends in Um Yang and encourage each other toward our monthly goals.
Aaawooo Tang Soo!
